Information on RCS

If you are not familiar with RCS, then we suggest that you first read the RCS White Paper. Further information is available on Release 1 and Release 2 specifications from the following documents (these are links to the latest versions):
Service Definition
Release 1 Functional Description
Release 2 Functional Description

For detailed technical implementation details, please consult the following documents:
Release 1 Technical Realisation
Release 2 Technical Realisation

Additional documents that may be of interest can be accessed on the GSMA’s RCS website Release Documents Section. If your entry is for Category 1 – Best Client, then it will be important that your entry follows as much of the RCS specifications as possible in order to score the highest marks from the judges. If your entry is for Category 2 – Best Innovation, then you have more freedom to create a “proof of concept” entry.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to be a member of the GSMA to enter the RCS DevChallenge contest?

No, you do not have to be a member of the GSMA. Entries are welcomed from any relevant organisation or individual.

Do I have to be a member of the GSMA’s RCS programme?

No. Membership of the programme is not required. However, if you are interested in joining the programme, please contact the Programme Administrator, Orla Ryan, by email at oryan@gsm.org.

Where do I find information about the RCS specifications?

All the RCS specifications are all downloadable from the GSMA’s RCS website.

Which RCS Release should I test my client against?

You can test your client or innovative solution against either or both the Release 1 or Release 2 specifications. All the RCS specifications are all downloadable from the GSMA’s RCS website.

Can I test my client on a real live RCS system

We expect to be able to make this capability available to registered entrants later this year. Please email us on rcsdevchall@gsm.org to indicate your interest in this capability.

Are there any restrictions on the mobile or device I can use for my client?

Any mobile device is welcomed as long as it uses the 3GSM/WCDMA family of technologies. There is no restriction as to the actual type of device, but it is expected that the device together with the entrant’s client will be made available to the RCS DevChallenge team for the RCS DevChallenge Meet in January 2010 and potentially for the Mobile World Congress in February 2010.

What do I have to do at the RCS DevChallenge Meet?

The objective of the DevChallenge Meet is for the judging panel to see your client application or innovative idea working. The ‘Meet’ will take place over two days at a location in Europe (dates and precise location to be announced). Day 1 of the ‘Meet’ will be set aside for technical testing and preparations. Day 2 of the ‘Meet’ will be your opportunity to show your contest entry to the judges and to the representatives of the RCS equipment vendors. The morning will be devoted to the judges and the afternoon will be an open opportunity for industry representatives to view all the entries. The three shortlisted entrants in each category will be announced at the end of Day 2.

Lunch will be supplied on both days. All other expenses (travel, accommodation etc.) will be the responsibility of the contestant.

Do I have to test my client in a fully interoperable environment?

No, it does not have to be fully tested. However, the criteria for judging in Category 1 (most useable client) includes coverage of the specifications – so more points are likely to be awarded by the judging panel to those entrants that can demonstrate interoperability.

What resources are available for me at the RCS DevChallenge Meet?

You will be expected to bring all the equipment you need in order to run a live demonstration. Engineers from the host company will be on hand on both days of the ‘Meet’ to help in your preparations and assist if there are any technical problems with the host network. Power supplies and Internet access will be provided.

What do I do if I have a question that isn’t covered in this FAQ?

Please contact the RCS DevChallenge administration by email at rcsdevchall@gsm.org.
